In the coming weeks Orofino residents will notice a new lighted 70 foot flagpole and 12 x 25 foot flag being installed on the “grassy knol” above the Orofino City Park at the entrance to Downtown Orofino. The Orofino Chamber of Commerce is funding and spearheading the project as a way to give back to the public for supporting local businesses.
“We are getting a double bonus out of this project, we get to give back to our community while drawing the attention of motorists passing on Highway 12, hopefully causing them to come on across the bridge and do some shopping at our local businesses” says past Chamber Director Stephanie Deyo.
Several groups have come together on this project to make it happen. The City of Orofino and the Orofino City Council have approved the placement and worked with the Chamber to complete and obtain a permit from the Idaho Department of Transportation to place the flag in their right of way.
Avista Corporation is also doing their part by volunteering to install the flag and bring power to the lights that will showcase the flag at night. “Mike Thomas and Mike Cook from our local Avista branch are our hero’s”, says Deyo “without their expertise and equipment this project would not have happened”.
“It will be beautiful at night all lit up and showcasing our town pride” says Orofino Mayor and Orofino Chamber Of Commerce Board of Directors member Ryan Smathers, “not to mention it will be a great addition to our other beautiful flag displays that are showcased around town during national holidays”.
The Orofino Chamber Of Commerce 2013 Bring Your Green Chamber Auction happened last Friday March 15th.
Chamber Director Stephanie Deyo reports “we really need to thank our generous volunteers, donors and sponsors. The Auction was a huge success, with their help we were able to meet and exceed our goals to have our “second” best year ever; without their help this Auction would not have been possible”.
The Auction funds will be pumped back into our Community through events and programs such as Orofino’s All American 4th Of July, Orofino’s Christmas Festival & Light Parade, Orofino Chamber Cash and the Chamber’s continued dedication towards keeping Orofino’s economy healthy and alive.
“I want to say a big thank you again on behalf of the Orofino Chamber Of Commerce to those who attended the event and those who helped in planning stages to make it happen” stated Deyo.
The 2013 Auction Committee who put the event together included: Tanna Zywina, Chairwoman, Dan & Terri Kiele, Ryan Smathers, Pat Larson, Dennis Harper, Connie Robison, Monica Jones, Ann Anderson, Will Wiese, Lenne Bonner, Debbi Duffy, Tammy Davis, Matt Sartini & Stephanie Deyo.
The Chamber is excited to move forward with their next major event, the June 8th Maniac Dam Race at Dworshak Reservoir. This race is a good example of what Orofino’s businesses and citizens participating and donating enabled the Chamber to offer to the community.

While the fishermen trying to get to the boat docks at Bruce’s Eddy might be a bit frustrated, it’s all for a good cause – a couple of them, actually. The Maniac Dam race is poised to become a popular 3K or 5K run walk, and not just for its unique course with access to the top of the Dworshak Dam, Clearwater River views and long open flat course.
It’s also because the organization that benefits from it is one that works directly towards improving the Orofino community and its businesses. The Orofino Chamber of Commerce is excited to be able to organize and run this healthy community event. Not to mention, the town’s hotels and restaurants, especially those with plenty of carbohydrates on the menu, will do a brisk business.
“Overall, the race/walk will be good for Orofino’s economy while providing citizens with unique access to the Dam. It's a chance to show off Orofino’s hospitality. We want to keep this race going and coming back year after year, it’s only going to get bigger!” says Zywina.
The race offers runners and walkers two unique choices, you can choose either a 5K (3.1 miles) run/walk or a 3K (1.86 miles) run/walk experience. Participants will check-in at the Dworshak Dam Visitors Center starting at 8 am. Racers will then proceed to the Dworshak View Point where the race will begin at 10 am. Participants will follow along the outlined 3K or 5K course across the Dworshak Dam to the midpoint check-in station and then return along the course to the finish line back at the Dworshak Dam Visitors Center where food, drinks and other activities will take place.
The race is open to all ages of people, the cost to pre-register is free for children under age 5, $20 for adults, and $15 for Youth (ages 6 to 10). Participants can also register the day of the event, but the fee will increase $10 for race day registration. Participants 18 years of age or younger must have an adult present to sign a waiver the day of the event, and all participants must present a valid photo id the day of the race for security purposes. All registration proceeds from this unique event will go back into the Orofino Community through the operations of the Orofino Chamber of Commerce.
